Big Ideas Concepts Overview:
Hello,
I am excited to work with your student while they learn more about the world of math. We will be working in a Math Notebook, a Record and Practice Journal, as well as in the virtual environment of BigIdeasMath.com, which includes a copy of the student text book, lesson tutorials, and homework. You and your student will be supplied with a login and password to work in the virtual environment, or they can work out of the text book.
Materials:
In class your student will be given a notebook that will be used for ALL Math activities. They will use it every day for note-taking and all other written assignments. Student are encouraged to use lots of color in their interactive notebook, such as colored pencils or ball point pens. Markers are NOT allowed however as the ink bleeds through the pages and we will use both the front and back of every page. Pens or pencils will be helpful for completing other assigments.
Grading:
The class grade will be broken into two weighted categories. The first category is worth 50% of the grade and it is the interactive notebook – chapter notes, daily warm up activities, class activities, etc. The interactive notebook will be where most, if not all math work is done, and I will collect and grade it at the end of every unit as well as randomly throughout the the chapters of study.
The second is worth 50% of the grade and will consist of tests and quizzes. Quizzes will be used to check for understanding and will be both announced as well as unannounced. Your child will be responsible for keeping their math notes current because they will be a large portion of their homework grade. Quizzes will be able to be made up for full credit if the quizz is corrected and turned in the day after the orginal quiz is given. Test will be able to be corrected or made up.
If your child is home, while ill, or had an excused absence for any reason, it is your child’s responsibility to get the work missed and returned to me within three days. The work will then be graded for full credit.
Late Work:
Late work is worth up to 80% of the original point value, as long as it is submitted with in three days .
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. The best way to contact me is through my email: djenner@susanvillesd.org because I check it throughout the day. It is also important to regularly monitor what is happening in your student’s class. I use a classroom website through Diamond View Webpage www.diamondviewschool.org Another useful link for staying informed about your child’s grades is the Schoolwise Grade Book - check it each week to monitor your child’s learning https://ssd.schoolwise.com. I am also using the Remind app.
You are always welcome to call me at school at 257-5144 extension 4129.

Grading:
The class grade will be broken into two weighted categories. The first category is worth 75% of the grade and it is the interactive notebook – chapter notes, labs, class activities, etc. The interactive notebook will be where most, if not all science work is done, and I will collect and grade it at the end of every unit as well as randomly throughout the the chapters of study.
The next category is worth 25% of the grade and will consist of tests and quizzes. Since we are continuing with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) many of the tests will be made up of short answers. Quizzes will be used to check for understanding and will be both announced as well as unannounced. Students will be allowed to make up quizzes for full credit within one day from the quizzes being given. There will be no retakes for tests.
I expect students to participate in the scientific process during labs, contribute to class discussion, and use the lab equipment appropriately. Should a student not use lab equipment in the manner for which it is meant, they will not be allowed to particpate in the lab, and will receive a zero for the given activity. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE!
If a student is home, while ill, or had an excused absence for any reason, it is your child’s responsibility to get the work missed and returned to me within three days. The work will then be graded for full credit.
Late Work:
Late work is worth up to 80% of the original point value, as long as it is submitted three days from the date it was assigned.
This year the science department will be using STEMscopes and will be using it via its web - based platform.
